Wire Binding is also known as Double Loop Wire binding, or Ring Wire binding, Twin Loop Wire binding is a relatively fast form of binding. Wire binding gives an aesthetically pleasing finish and a sense of quality to the bound pages. Bound documents open easily, lie flat, and fold 360° making them ideal for many applications such as financial reports, note books, proposals, cook books and training manuals.

Electric closers can also greatly enhance productivity such as the Renz ECL360

HOW IT WORKS: Wire is available in two patterns - 2 loops (2:1 pitch) per inch or 3 loops (3:1 pitch) per inch. The number of holes in the documents must match the wire pattern. The wire comes "open" so that the punched pages can be inserted into the loops. After all of the pages are in place the book is inserted into a closing machine where a closing bar either electronically or manually closes the wire to a predetermined diameter, making a round, sealed bind.

DOCUMENT THICKNESS: 1/4" to bind up to 35 sheets through 1½" to bind up to 320 sheets of 80gsm.

wire binding capability.
G10 TAKES RENZ ROUTE
Birmingham litho and digital printer G10 Design & Print is eyeing increased opportunities in producing calendars for the restaurant market, after a decision to invest in a Renz semi-automatic Mobi 500 wire binder and P500 bench top punch.
G10 managing director Jorid Miah completed the deal at the IFS Print
Efficiently event in June, purchasing the equipment from dealer Binding
Store. Both the Mobi 500 binding machine and Punch 500 E electricdesktop heavy duty punch work to a maximum working width of 500
mm, and therefore go ‘hand in hand’, according to Binding Store’s Russell Cunningham.
Previously, G10 had no wire binding in-house and was having to outsource this type of work to the trade, so the investment allows the company to retain control of jobs and to produce wire-bound calendars and books on demand when required. Mr Cunningham added: ‘Speed of make ready was
important to G10 and the Renz machines are very easy to set up. Keeping the calendar work in-house is the main thing, and it gives G10 the flexibility to do short and long runs at the drop of a hat.’

ADS-Graphics buy semi automatic wire binding equipment

Binding Store were asked to supply a cost effective, efficient and productive wire binding package to ADS-Graphics based in Deeside. The equipment supplied was a full reconditioned Renz RSB-360 semi automatic wire binding machine and a new Renz DTP-340A semi automatic punch complete with 3:1 and 2:1 binding tools.
Product training was given to two members of staff who had never used automatic binding equipment. Both staff were running live jobs on the machinery within a very short time frame and were amazed at the amount of time that had been saved in comparison to using there old manual wire binding equipment.
The Renz DTP-340A is capable of punching up to 25,000 sheets of 80gsm paper in one hour, making it fastest in its class and the Renz RSB-360 will run steadily at 1250 books per hour making this machine a real workhorse for the bindery.

Knight Frank buy Laminator from Binding Store

Real Estate consultants Knight Frank have bought a Matrix 370 Laminator from Binding Store Ltd. The semi automatic laminator has replaced a hand fed laminator. Tarique Awan of Knight Frank says "We are now keeping all of our laminating in house and needed a faster semi automatic machine that gives top quality results with no silvering or bubbles". The Matrix-370 laminates at a max speed of 10 mitres a minute and gives excellent quality results for a relativly low outlay.
The Matrix laminator was installed and full product training given to 3 staff by Binding Store in an afternoon making the Matrix 370 one of the easiest laminators to learn and operate.

Ideal Finishing has invested in its first automatic punch in a bid to increase capacity.

The company, which started in January last year, installed a refurbished James Burn Lhermite auto punch, and a RileCart TP480 binding machine supplied by Binding Store earlier this month.

Ideal Finishing managing director Paul Forrester said: "We made these investments to increase capacity and to produce more on a daily basis. At full speed, it can punch a million sheets a day."

The finishing house has expanded over the past 13 months and currently turns over £500,000 a year, according to Forrester.

Ideal Finishing has moved from a 139sqm facility where it employed three staff to operating a 465sqm site. It now employs 11 production staff.

Forrester said the company would be making future investments and was looking to buy at least one other auto punch, similar to the James Burn Lhermite, and another Moby 500 binder.

"The new ones do look interesting but the older ones are more robust. We’re looking down the second-hand route rather than new." he added.

Ideal Finishing, which was started by Forrester and fellow director Chris Carden, installed a 10/20 station Duplex A3/A4 collator from collating machine supplier Col-Tec Solutions

Face Creative buy Introma Stitcher

Face creative services have purchased a new Introma stitching machine from Binding Store. The machine was installed just before chrismas and is being used for producing large format stitched booklets produced on there xeikon digital engine.
Colin Harding; production director at Face states that the machine also has the added benefit of being able to stab stitch books up to 40mm in thickness without having to make any major changes to machine settings.
A Fastback 15xs Binding machine was also brought in at the same time so Face can now offer a case binding service.
All machinery was installed and in production in just a few hours.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE WIRE BINDING

It’s calendar season: that time of year when wire binding comes into its own;and for Ideal Finishing, a trade finisher in Croydon, that could make a very successful first year of trading even better. The firm started in January 2010 with two staff, and nine months later has eleven employees, and turnover approaching a quarter of a
million pounds.
Director Paul Forrester says that wire
binding is 85% of the company’s work,and with spiral binding added, the proportion goes higher still. While a flood of calendar binding work can be expected,
Ideal has just won another wire binding
contract of around £60,000 from direct mail, print and promotional items company Impakt MMD Group, for jobs such as branded notepads. It means that Ideal Finishing is going to need to invest in more equipment, said Mr Forrester: ‘I’ve got the kit I need – I just need more of them. I need another Renz Mobi
500, a fully automatic auto-punch, and a much larger guillotine. We’ll be looking at a Polar 115 guillotine.’
The Mobi 500 is a semi-automatic wire binding system from Renz which uses reels
of wire rather than cut wire. Paired with the Renz AP360 puncher, it’s capable of a three
minute makeready and can produce 600 books per hour. When bought new, it’s a
£20,000 machine (£55,000 with the
puncher). Renz says it has been selling the systems at a rate of one a week since Ipex.
Mr Forrester has a high regard for Renz and its equipment (he already has one
Mobi 500), but he also has a good relationship with equipment dealer
Binding Store, where good deals can be picked up on used machinery. The
company often has a good range of Renz and Joto equipment, said Mr Forrester, as
well as being strong on parts and service.‘The Renz Mobi is probably more futuristic than any wire binder I’ve seen for years,’ he continued. ‘It handles size changes automatically, and that’s quite amazing.’
He added that Ideal was suited to medium sized jobs from its print customers, and offered a cheaper service than most in what is a niche market. ‘We wouldn’t take anything over about 50,000 copies and 50 pages. Fifty
thousand copies at 14 pages would be lovely though. We are middle of the road
and we take on a lot of work from colleges. We’ve had people ringing to ask
if we could bind their thesis. And we will - no matter how small, we will do it,’ said Mr Forrester.
Renz isn’t the only supplier to the wire binding market: there is Joto (or Rilecart)
from Italy as mentioned, There is a wealth of machines, from entry level benchtop models that small offices might use, through the professional benchtop ranges and the floor standing semi-automatics such as the Mobi and the JBI BB50/H Wire-O binder, up to inline systems that might punch and bind 1500 books per hour.
The recession has seen increasing numbers of printers opt to take wire binding inhouse, according to Daniel Pooley of Renz, which has been good news for equipment
manufacturers in one regard, but not so good for their trade finisher customers. If that is the case, Ideal Finishing appears to buck the trend.

produced – which will be a boon for one trade finisher in particular.
Renz’s Mobi 500 and AP360 puncher is proving to be a popular combination.
‘The market has been pretty fluid,’ said Mr Pooley. ‘The Mobi was launched at
Northprint last year. It allows you to do more jobs with quicker turnaround. You
can bind on demand because makeready is so fast. It’s a workhorse really – some
people throw everything at it. But once you know a trade finisher is happy with it,
you know it can go anywhere.’
Operating the system is comparatively simple too, and Renz says that a day’s
training is sufficient. Next to come from the German manufacturer is a benchtop puncher (the DSP360, a beta of which was shown at Ipex) that will process 40,000 sheets per hour, and a ‘mini Mobi’ that will be well suited to unskilled operators in
digital print houses.
While there’s no release date for the mini Mobi, the DSP360 is due to be available around January/February
2011. Could be worth marking that in your calendar now.

Binding Store to distribute for Col-Tec

Finishing equipment distributor Binding Store has been appointed to sell collating equipment for Col-Tec.

The two companies confirmed the agreement at a Heidelberg finishing open house in Tamworth earlier this month, where Col-Tec was exhibiting a deep-pile collator.
Russell Cunningham, Binding Store managing director, said he was attracted to the machines because of their versatility. According to Cunningham, the Col-Tec gatherer can be integrated into many standalone binders to offer in-line perfect binding.
"The range fits in very well with our existing portfolio of binding machinery that we supply to trade printers and print finishers. They have the capability of feeding from the thinnest stock right up to finished perfect-bound book blocks," he added.
Binding Store is able to offer the full range on both new and refurbished collators.

Sandgate Printers take delivery of MATRIX-530 LAMINATOR

Binding Store Ltd have installed a Matrix MX-530 semi automatic single sided laminator at Sandgate Printers.
Sean Diwell, Director needed the Matrix-530 to cope with work produced on there Xerox-5000 digital print engine, as well as conventionally printed lithographic work produced on there Heidelberg GTO-52 press.
Full product training and installation was performed in half a day. Sean stated that he was very impressed with the results from the Matrix-530 and is now happy to keep complete control of there print process and not needing to worry if a trade finisher is going to complete their lamination job on time.

Bookbinders Abbey Bookbinding & Print has received a massive increase in its spiral binding capacity after an investment from finishing equipment supplier Binding Store.

The Cardiff-based company previously wire bound by hand and managing director Roger Cottrell said that runs of over 250 were not economically viable.

However, the company installed a Renz AP360 six months ago and a Renz Mobi 500 in July after customers repeatedly enquired about longer runs.

He said: "With the Renz binding machines we can now handle runs of up to 40,000 books, it has been paying itself off already. Over the next 12 months we will look to increase our workflow and will be advertising our service further afield than South Wales."

Cottrell added that an eighth member of staff had joined the £500,000 turnover company. Two more members of staff are expected to join in the next 12 months

Abbey Bookbinders buy Renz Mobi-500

Binding Store have supplied a Renz mobi-500 to Abbey bookbinders of Cardiff. The machine was installed two weeks after Abbey bought a Renz P-500. Both machines have been purchased for Abbey to enter into the calendar binding market.
Roger Cotteral, MD of Abbey bookbinders comented that "we looked at other calendar binding systems and we liked the Renz the most.

Sea White have expanded there punching capabilitys by installing a Renz AP360 autopunch supplied by Binding Store. The Autopunch will aid Sea White with the punching of there Artpads that they supply and accompany a Renz Super 700 and a Renz RSB360 also supplied by Binding Store.

Online finishing kit reseller Binding Store has moved to a new 100m2 premises and showroom, following an upturn in business.

"Believe it or not, we're actually getting busier," said managing director Russell Cunningham. "I know there's a lot of doom and gloom out there, but business is definitely heading in the right direction and that's why we needed to move."

The St Albans-based firm's range includes binding, shredding, folding/creasing, laminating, shrinkwrapping and cutting kit from companies such as Busch, D&K, Horizon, HSM, RotaTrim and Vivid. It was also recently appointed as an official distributor of Renz punching and binding equipment.

"A lot of the machines we sell are about fast return on investment and that seems a pretty popular message," said Cunningham, who, prior to founding the business five years ago, held various senior roles at both print companies and equipment suppliers.

The Managing Director of Binding Store Ltd, Russell Cunningham has officially opened a new showroom in St. Albans. The showroom now gives Binding Store Ltd the ability to showcase their comprehensive range of Renz equipment both new and used.

This new facility for to the Binding Store group further strengthens their already successful business portfolio which has grown rapidly from humble beginnings as a purely online retailer. Mr. Cunningham said “we are totally focused on becoming a leading distributor in the print finishing market” Mr. Cunningham has 26 years of experience in both print and finishing production as well as selling both print fishing equipment and related consumables. First Matrix 530 laminator installed

The first Matrix 530 laminator was installed on Friday 13th March. Despite Friday 13th being traditionally a day for bad luck we are pleased to say that the installation and training went without a hitch! The laminator will be used to finish work from DP graphics docucolour 2047 as well as offering a trade laminating service to local litho and digital printers. Derek Payne, MD of DP graphics stated that "There has been considerable interest from existing customers and other printers" and is even planning an open house to show the new equipment running. Laminating brought in house by Caprin Printers

Caprin printers, based in St. Albans have purchased a Matrix Duo laminator from Binding Store so they can now keep all laminating in house.
Ajay Gudka (M.D) states that "the Matrix duo has enabled us to keep full control of jobs and helps us meet tight deadlines" The machine will also encapsulate as well as laminate with materials from 30 microns upto 250 microns.
Caprin have a full lithographic and digital printing facility and needed a laminator that was capable of coping with both media types.

Time to jump onto the latest trend in print collateral management, no this is not a war but print presentation is very competitive. On a level playing field, when say price and quality of a customer’s stationery is comparable, how do you win more and secure your existing business? We need to take up our customer’s position and go the extra mile in helping them manage their print needs. Consider banding the usual box of 1000 letterheads in 100’s. This will save waste when salesmen raid the stationery cupboard and either takes a whole box or a handful that will be ruined sliding around in the boot of a car. Supplying decanted print batches will look more professional and save plastic in packaging. As importantly these wrappers will save the normal elastic band damage to digital print, especially those batches of a few hundred A6 colour flyers. Finishing specialist Folio has invested £ 90,000 and brought in six new staff in its bid to corner the wiro-binding market.
The Bristol-based company has installed a Renz P500, ECL500 and Autobind 500 supplied by Bindingstore Ltd, in addition to a collection of secondhand equipment that was bought in August.According to Folio managing director Andy Bird, the company decided to add wiro-binding to its array of finishing services when a local finishing company, Cotswold Print Finishers (CPF), closed in July.Folio brought in CPF''s managing director Alan Churchill, bought some of the company''s equipment, and added to its machinery portfolio with the Renz investment.Bird said: "We would not have dreamed of investing in wiro-binding while Cotswold was still going, because then it would not be a niche service. But we have talked about moving into that area and with them closing it seemed like the right time."We now have an extensive finishing service it is easier to say what we don''t do than what we can do."The £ 3m-turnover company has also added five new staff, taking its total number of employees to more than 70. Several of the new staff were brought over from CPF, which Bird believes will help Folio maintain a high-quality service.He added: "We want to be a ''jack of all trades'', but we need to have the knowledge and skill in each of those areas.
